well perhaps over stating the event but i've just seen a bright flash in the east. no satelite before or after (thinking of Iridium flare).

any confirmation/ideas. looked just like a star increased in brightness by a very large amount then faded.

Whatever it was, it wasn't a supernova. They flare up over a period of days and weeks, not as a bright flash. Probably an Iridium flare.

i would not imagine a super nova would brighten and fade that quick, probably a meteor heading towards you rather streaking across the sky

Could be a Satellite, being in the East it would catch the Sun and tumbling about you could have just caught a reflection from a reflective surface....
