Light Pollution Map

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I just want to share something regarding light pollution.

I am using Google earth to plan my observation sites here and abroad.

I have done Europe and South America. Pretty good!

How to do it?

  1. Download Google earth.
  2. Save on your computer a light pollution map image you want from The World Atlas of the Artificial Night Sky Brightness
  3. Open Google Earth and move the map over the area you want.
  4. Overlay the picture saved over the Google map as follow:
  • Click: Add > Image overlay.
  • Give to the overlay a name and click browse to find the picture saved.
  • Use the green corners and lines to make the picture match the Google map.
  • Click: OK. Zoom in wherever you want.

Parental Guidance: Don't get too upset with what you see!

The pics are great, only one thing though - The TIFF is 72mb. I saved it as a PNG and it went right down to 1.73mb! In the Location tab, the ideal co-ordinates seem to be (roughly)

North 72°31'3.00"N

South 31°31'35.37"N

East 29°13'1.87"E

West 10°23'17.87"W

Rotation 0.0000

Thanks for posting the Light Pollution Map for Google Earth and the Numerical Weather Forecast links..I'm going to add these! Cheers Scosmico! :)

For all those who want to add the weather strip, I advice to reduce its size to 300 and 150 instead of 600 and 300.

... width="600" height="300" ...

  • 6 months later...

I have run into a problem when doing this, I set the image before I edited it for size and location and now I can't remove the overlayed image to try again.

Does anyone know how to remove an overlayed image?
