bish
Hi all,I'm considering getting a telrad as so many people rave about them and it may help with initial location. I don't want to get rid of the 9x50 finder but use both (ie the telrad in the first instance and then the 9x50 finder if needed to pin point). Is it possible to mount both on the OTA or would I have swap them over ?Thanks
Moonshane
This is exactly what I do on both my 6" and 12" dobs.Highly recommended. Sometimes the Telrad on its own is enough but for more tricky things I Telrad initially and then star hop with the optical finder
bish
Thanks for your reply Moonshane, it seems like a winning combination using both.
TheThing
I've got a Baader Sky Surfer V and a Telrad mounted on my SW 200p. The Baader replaced the optical finder - straight swap - and the Telrad is mounted next to it using the sticky fixer pads that came with it.I have to say that the Telrad is an excellent piece of kit. I've only had one session with it but find it much easrier to use and great for 'hopping' about.
bish
I didn't realise they came with sticky fixer pads. Makes life easier.
Moonshane
they do and I have taken off from time to time (new scope etc) and refixed using car number plate sticky pads. work a treat.
Andy79
Are the sticky pads strong enough to keep the telrad in place then? especially if the scope is in one of those akward positions ei..looking straight up...also how long do these pads last? only that im interested in one of these also
Moonshane
if you apply to a dry/clean OTA and leave for 24 hours I would say they pretty much last forever. Just check every now and again and take off when not in use.
Moonshane
you can of course drill the OTA and bolt in place but I have never bothered.

ollypenrice
Ten years on and still stuck like a limpet...I have two to supplement finders and could not live without them. I love the fact that they don't use stoopid watch batteries and so last ages!Olly
bish
That's definitely sold it for me. Time to get the wallet out again - at least it wont do as much damage as the televue sale did (and I still think maybe I should have bought another nagler). KenG
I have two Telrad mounts on my Newtonian and shift the finder between them depending on which way the scopes orientated.
Adz
Hey Bish,I mounted mine next to the optical finder, you can see how in my thread herehttp://stargazerslounge.com/equipment-reviews/140240-skywatcher-skyliner-200p-unboxing-building-some-add-ons.html#post1794085HTH
derekm
Very big and heavy. Take a look at a Rigel Quickfinder; only weighs about 35 grams, battery lasts for ever and the rings can be faded and pulsed as standard.
swamp thing
Very big and heavy..What! a Telrad heavy:icon_scratch:It's only a 3/4 empty plastic box with a couple of batteries in.It weighs next to nothing.Regards Steve

As you wish.
Adz
I personally prefer the telrad as it looks a lot safer on the tube than the Rigel. I have to constantly my scope in and out of my small car. But to each their own.
Moonshane
I also prefer the Telrad. It seems less fussy about eye placement than the Rigel. The Rigel was good if you are close to it (e.g. refractors) but not so much with newts). I always take mine off though.
