  1. I was new to scope buying then The Vixen was much lighter, but its tube seemed very thin. Mr Fuller was more nervous of it being handled than a Genesis as well. I still have the Genesis, but would probably have sold a FL - though considering a Japanese lightweight refractor now!
  2. FL102S was the one I turned down. Bought my TV Genesis instead.
  3. Found this while browsing https://www.tringastro.co.uk/vixen-ax103s-telescope---ex-display-8651-p.asp Triplet ex-display with focal reducer sale price 1999.00. A Tak rival.
  4. Stu, can you get a screw on lens cap to go on the hood threads, if you remove your metal hood?
  5. Ian King offers 95mm Parallax rings as an option to the clam, presumably a buyer would use an ordinary dovetail bar.
  6. LVWs are just small enough. I have a pair of 20mm LVs which have less FOV, but so far not needed.
  7. 13mm is a good fl for bino viewers. I have a pair of 13mm LVW Vixen eps.
  8. I think a F7.5 100mm being light and short-ish would be a good spotting scope and telephoto lens (when camouflauged) as well as travel/g&g astro, so a DF is on my to-buy list for later. ?
  9. I yield to your greater knowledge ? but the article I linked to suggested to me at time of reading, that grown flourite crystals = synthetic. Had SW been using proper flourite, it would have been advertised. D'oh me! ?
  10. But does not mean lesser, or inferior. Quite the opposite possibly ? Who is it makes the lenses for Takahashi? ? https://www.geologyin.com/2015/10/why-do-fluorite-crystals-use-to-make.html
  11. FPL53 (and 51) are synthetic flourite, so do count ? As to whether Taks ? are better, I hope one day to find out ?????
  12. Thank you John, interesting comparison. I thought the Vixen had a flourite lens! As SW ED PRO models do, perhaps your 120 is a smidgeon closer to your Tak for that reason. Tak F7.5 seem to be ideal travel/grab scopes, while F9 is perhaps the "Home Not Away" one to own. All that remains is to compare a SW 100 ED PRO F9 doublet against a DL.
  13. Stu I agree with you on rings vs clamp. What would concern me is that the one clamp has only one fastening bolt, while 2 rings are separate holders, each with its own bolt. And an extra could be bought. My TV frac has a clamp, but, it holds the tube with two allen hex screws and is very secure. The Tak's is more user friendly, but the user could be caught out that one time.....
  14. So, both being Japanese, how do the 100mm Vixens compare with Tak doublet rivals from your experience John?
  15. Brighter images when on a DSO hunt are good, filter or not. Do you know if there is a scale for measuring through-the-eyepiece brightness? From what has been written when reviewing filters, maybe the filter itself would make most difference.
  16. I keep the cups rolled down now. Made my own caps to fit the wider diameter. LVW cups roll easily enough. WA FOV is addictive. But if a 25mm LV or two went on sale, I would get it/them hoping for a bv pair.
  17. Mine, pre-owned, was just under my limit. I looked for the Celestron & Orion first. Orion do a Deepview model now, maybe that's the new name/clothes/re-tread for Ultrascopic. Baader are not offering the 35mm with their Mk 5 bino viewer anymore. The photo of latter shows it with Hyperion zooms instead.
  18. Decades of collecting stuff; audio, visual, photo etc, have taught me that its all a waiting game. And for searching, less yields more. Also buying retro in this must-have-latest world is an advantage. Hardest to get are things lost in your own house.
  19. In 2018 I have had delivered a 2nd Vixen LVW 22mm eye piece, Celestron 2x Barlow, Pocket Sky Atlas Jumbo edition, Sky Catalogue Vol 2. 2000.0. (3 more, the final 3, eps to come) Photography: a Zeiss Touit 50mm macro 1:1 lens House insurance bill, credit card bill, energy bill.
  20. I have been considering the 40mm TV plossl, as though its got the same TFOV as my 32mm, the images though smaller will be brighter when used as a finder ep. Also its 31.7mm fit.
