  1. Usually in receipt of (scroll through!) various Astro "Photo of the Day" Tweets... https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2023/hubble-snaps-a-galactic-jellyfish But Hubble's "Jellyfish" Galaxy caught my eye. Also the multi-nucleate neighbour?!? 😎
  2. I have the idea (from somewhere) that larger diameter rockets are envisaged? Twenty seven out of thirty three ain't bad? ("Two out of Three ain't bad" - ML) 😛 But, I wouldn't have gone for the common bulkhead between Methane & O2! 😉 Casually wonder about venting proximity - I assume concentrations too low...
  3. A "Wet dress rehearsal" ... apparently! 😉
  4. Watching on: https://www.youtube.com/live/eN57x2a_waw?feature=share Musk tweeted it's still on schedule for take off in about an hour? ~14:00+? Came across one random factoid: Starship is "segmented" because the particular brand of 3.6mm stainless steel comes in "standard" width rolls! 😉
  5. Dix... Neuf... Huit... ... Deux... Un... "Top"! Just sits there for a bit?!? 😛 SHE was clearly only going in her own time! [teasing] 😅 Shame it takes so long... I might be dead etc. 🙄
  6. Some folks do have these "exciting" stories re. academic supervision? 😉 Him: <cough> "Going alright then, Chris"? Me: Uhm... OK... I think? Thanks! Him: "Gooood"! Thoroughly Nice / Decent chap - Not un-typical Physicist? 😅 P.S. Can't spell (type?) Thread Titles either! ðŸĪĢ
  7. Researching a (famous) Scientist's Wiki, I noted various (significant) "graduate" students! Then I began to wonder... Would it be possible? And indeed: https://academictree.org/ 😎 (It can be of additional interest to learn how academics relate? A "Who knew Who" etc?) Like most Family Trees", a certain "dimensionality" (width!) problem? The Physics Tree: N.B. There ARE also Astronomers! (Not sure I know how to "drive" this yet?) No close relations... But I have actually *heard* of some of them! 😅
  8. We always SAY "Starlight is Parallel"... But then recalling the *Apparent forward displacement* diagram from Physics?!? 😎 They also say: "We leave it as an "Exercise for the Reader"! 😅
  9. Recall (misspent youth) some "wicked person" (a Chemist!) claimed to have done the: "Vacuum Desiccator versus Bluebottle" experiment! Youtube makes this a reality... Exoskeletons Rule? 😎
  10. As a kid, I read a book where an Astronaut was "rescued" sans Space Suit"! "Breathing Space did not harm me - But I got the worst dose of Sunburn"? 😎 Something called "Stirring Stories for Boys"? We were made of stern stuff! 😅
  11. <Pondering> I could never work in "Space Science"! Spend TEN YEARS of your life *building* something... and then it might just "blow up" on the launchpad?!?ðŸ˜ą I do feel a bit sorry for NASA... They can do nothing right... in the eyes of some... Hope R. Branson is OK too! Back in the 70's, "risk" was owning a Virgin Record? 😅
  12. What we need is a Theolocution to Fructify things! (Sorry - couldn't resist) 😛 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dwcjpmVOmqc (Needn't watch it all!) (I always thought "Theo Locution" was a member of the... Borg Collective!)
  13. I liked this... by Anton Petrov: https://youtu.be/UkMtVJDaksI "Absolutely Nothing was discovered by Scientists today"! 😎
  14. Good to know the employees have not been totally abandoned?!? Maybe they deserved more than ONE attempt? Recently, the Japanese also suffered a similar "orbital failure"? 😐 I only noticed 'cos ESA sent them a rather sporting: "Better luck next time, Folks!" Tweet! 😎 https://youtu.be/pf-iZz3Pggw (Japanese H3 Rocket Failure - Destruct Command issued) Of course the *Elon Fans* are forever "roaring him on"... seemingly forgetting any failures?
  15. Once worked in an area where so-called "minimum ionizing" muons were sprayed "randomly" (liberally?) from a more general particle beam target/stop. Useful for calibrating detector prototypes etc. Of course, the Muons were fairly harmless. Radiation doses were monitored carefully etc. Still alive (apparently)? 😏 Jokes about wearing "lead underpants" were not unknown among (predominantly male!) Physicists?!? 😅
  16. Guess the OX weight! (Start at 4:15 re. "Collective Intelligence") 😉 This is probably DEFINITIVE! You can watch the whole thing tho...
  17. It's interesting to read the views of one "Grand Old Man" of Physics? 😎 https://www.quantamagazine.org/carlo-rubbia-calls-for-courage-as-physicists-confront-collider-dilemma-20190807/ The techniques of Muon Colliders make interesting reading as well? 🙂 (Some of the pioneering work is actually being done here in the UK!)
  18. Yes, I often feel it's a "shame"... The TITAN "Dragonfly"? (I may just... hopefully!?! lol) So many scientists discussing "other things"? It is surely their right, but there is also a lot of standard (FUN!) science to "promote & inform" re. the young/ignorant/etc. 😉
  19. Thank you, Mr. H! Not many, thus far? But in the spirit of things... https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCciQ8wFcVoIIMi-lfu8-cjQ Anton Petrov's Youtube channel! Welcome relief from the "intensity" of Celebrity Science? lol. But prodigious and interesting output! 😉
  20. The big thing: You can (some extent) FILTER emission spectra from Na/Hg lights. Not a lot you can do with deliberately-broadened spectra of "White" LED lights. On my I-net travels, I noted this: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/632558 😉 If ALL the Amateur Astronomers could ALL vote for such things... maybe?
  21. Will it (base) fit though the back door... Can I lift the bloomin' thing etc. ðŸĪŠ Maybe "collimation"? As owner of a stick & string TS 8" f/4 "Astrograph", I'd be reluctant to go faster than f/5. Difficulties as the "cube" of f-num? 😉 P.S. In another life, I sense I'd try/use above 8" Newt on my Sky-T mount. The stars did look temptingly BRIGHT when I looked through it visually. 😎
  22. This seems to be a place where people *could* contribute favourite links to Science (STEM?) Stuff. Websites, Youtube Videos, Science Blogs etc. 🙂 (I'll leave someone else to start this off - Gauge if there is ANY interest?) Bumper: 1670s, "glass filled to brim;" from notion of bumping as "large," or from a related sense of "booming" (see bump). The meaning "anything unusually large" (as in bumper crop) is from 1759, originally slang. 😛
  23. Just ask this bloke? He'll know *exactly* how many... 😉 When you went to "the shop" for a Bag o' sweets etc. 😛
  24. Balkans! ðŸĪĢ Or rather Balkanisation of TV (media)? (There are just too many channels!) 😏 How would YOU make S@N better? Astronomy is just too niche / unexciting? But Thanks for reminding me, that I might be *notified* via TWITTER! Though I currently have a running battle with the latter, to reduce the "babble" (qv) 😅
  25. A very good summary of Prof. Cox's thesis! I did then wonder re. her background... Not many people talk of Pomerons like they are a "familiar"? Interesting personal stuff: Dunno... Ph.D. or "follow your dreams" as a Youtuber? Many (women) talk of abuse received online? She was spotted with "Physics Girl" (Dianna Cowern). 😎 Maybe a bit of "seague"... but I was SAD (Human aspect of Physics?) to see D.C. is in hospital with knock-on of "Long Covid": https://youtu.be/vydgkCCXbTA 😐 On a lighter note, maybe they should teach some "Maths for Physics Students"? At least where I was concerned, there was a fair gap, between the 1st Deg level and the sort of *Matrix Algebra* expected of the more "Theoretical" Physicists. Maybe this slightly more user-friendly (less combative?) style could be useful... Something as "simple" as e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Einstein_notation 😎
