Meade SWA 18mm or Hyperion 17mm

Recommended Posts

Hi Dave

I have the meade series 4000 SWA 18mm.

It's not a bad eyepiece in my f/4.5 Dobs so should work ok if your scopes are slower than that.

I have'nt used the 17mm hyperion though, so can't compare them. Although I have heard they work well in scopes over f/5.

Must add though IMO £100 is a lot of money for an old model eyepiece.

If I sell mine I wouldn't ask that much for em.

Regards Steve

I've used the Meade 4000 18mm and 24.5mm. Decent eyepieces in F/7 or slower scopes but I would not pay £100 for one - I seem to recall my 24.5mm was around £40 too. I had difficulty in selling the 18mm at that price. This was some years ago mind.

You could get a 16mm UWAN for £100 (theres one on Astro Buy & Sell for £90 in fact) and that would show much more sky than the Meade 18mm 4k SWA and be sharper across the field to boot.

I believe that the 5000's are a significant step forward from the 4000's.

I'm confused, this thread seems to have been revived from March and is now talking about UWAs not SWAs?

Well spotted Ben - more than I did :)

The original subject was the 18mm series 4000 SWA but I guess the OP reached a decision way back :)

Shows it's cloudy - we will latch onto anything for a discussion !.
