Hi Kelly, sorry to hear about your loss.

Hope people on here can help you sort out the equipment as having been there know how tricky it can be.

Dont worry about the lateness of posts. I work nights about ever 2 weeks. The internet is always working just some of the posters may be having a few hours shut eye or out viewing if its not cloudy.

Hi Kelly,

I lost an Aunt in December 2009 and was tasked by the friends of Hers who inherited the estate to clear the house. Basically they lived too far away and by clearing the house and selling it for them we got to keep all the family keepsakes.

It has, to say the least been a nightmare. My poor Aunt collected so much paperwork and we could not just throw it out. Every single piece of paper had to be looked at. Every book had to be checked to see if it was of any value before being given to charity. Every item of furniture, crockery and ornaments. Unless you have knowledge of this type of thing how could you be expected to know?

I hired a garage, not a small one but a business that is a garage next door to my offices. We have just about finished after 14 months and are breathing a sigh of relief. So many antique shops, auction houses, second hand furniture and charites have visited to look through the items.

I have to say it has prompted me to realise I need to empty the two lofts I have at home and the lofts I have in my offices. So as I don't give my family the same trouble that we have been through.

As an aside I can tell you that the cost of doing this has been in excess of £50k to me and I was not the one to inherit the estate! Madness eh!

Best regards

Chris

Sounds like a nightmare Chris :o 50K! Jeeze Louise! I hope you've managed to recoup some of that!

I hope she hasn't got as much other things as you had. Never known of that much cost when dealing with a death. When my relatives have passed on it was always a simple process even though there was lots to sort.

Not what you need when mourning a loved one :( You have my sympathies, fella.

Putting this in to perspective, though: Kelly has 3 scopes, a mount and some bits for us to help her with. It's not going to be difficult for the community to help identify what they are. Most of us have more stuff in our signatures! lol

She's clearly intelligent so taking photos isn't going to be an issue for her.

There will need to be some experience needed on identifying the condition though. When things are identified your offer of a visit could come in handy :)

... is there anyone who could swing by mine and tell me what i've got and how much (if anything) it's worth? im on the somerset/doset border, near yeovil. please send me an email if you can help! thanks!

Sorry to hear of your situation. You are quite close to Exeter. We don't normally buy secondhand kit but I would be happy to offer you an evaluation.

This place if full of trustworthy people but there's always those who like to confuse and be dishonest in order to bag a bargain at someone's expense. This is a very popular forum and they do lurk...so be aware.

That is good advice.

HTH,

Steve :)

It might be better for FLO to value the items as: -

- They have little/no interest in buying them, but can provide a fair value and, possibly, even help to move them on. FLO, after all, sell only new kit not 2nd hand stuff and are the leading experts in the equipment field.

- Whilst Chris has made (repeatedly) a very generous offer, he's only been a member here for a few months and so might not have the techincal expertise to know what all of the equipment is and its current worth. (No offence intended Chris, but in the OP's shoes a company with a proven track record would get my vote).

Best of all, I think we should now leave the OP to decide herself and she can communicate her decision, if she wants to, in due course. Let's not keep hassling her ladies and gents.

Sorry for your loss. I too travel to Yeovil regularly as family still there. More than happy to have a look and take photos and post details of them for you on the forum. As has been said before don't rush into anything!

Thanks

Hello Leliel,

I'm sure more experienced folk will be along shortly to advise, however both the LX200 and the LX10 are lovely scopes and in good condition should sell quickly and for a good price.

Do try again on those images when you can.

Kind Regards,

Mike

Well I can certainly confirm that in the last set of images, the unknown object is a what's known as a 'wedge' which is a device that sits between the forked arms that carry the scope itself and the tripod which supports the whole kit. It's use is to help tilt the scope in such a way that it can then track stars as they move across the night's sky 'equatorially' (which is how they appear to move to us on earth - in an a arc) rather than tracking stars across the sky in a stepped fashion (up a bit and across a bit etc). Hope that helps.

Clear skies

Having gone through the images it would appear you have the following:

Scopes:

- MEADE LX10 EMC Schmidt Cassegrain with counter weight bar & weight, spotter

scope.

Focal Length: 2000mm

Mirror: 203.2mm

F10

(Notes: On the motor drive case says 'Magelin 1')

- MEADE LX200 Schmidt Cassegrain with damaged finder scope (covered in tape)

Focal Length: 2500mm

Mirror: 254mm

F10

- White refractor no details or any markings on it. Looks about 3" maybe slightly smaller with finder scope attached

via a 45 degree sloping bracket. External condition not good and no image available on objective lens.

Mounts:

MEADE standard tripod made in Irvine, USA. Not sure from your pictures if there is just one of these for each of the above scopes are whether there is only the one for both. There is also a Meade wedge as mentioned in my earlier post.

Wooden tripod.

Metal tripod with Alt Azimuth head attached.

CELESTRON metal tripod with wedge attachment on top.

I'm not sure what the next step might be for you. If you are thinking of selling this equipment, it would be important for you to know if any of this equipment still works and how well and possibly to obtain some clearer photos of each of the setups. From past posts regarding members offering to help you, including our sponsor First Light Optics, I will leave it to you to decide on how next to proceed.

James
