Zooms are more expensive, but when you add up the cost of say 4 £50 eyepieces they are actually pretty good value. It IS a lot to splash out in one go though.

I've now ordered the Baader Hyperion 8-24mm MKIII.

Wow! wow! wow! wow! I took delivery of my Baader Hyperion Zoom this morning. I'd read in a review that it was big (like a grenade the guy said) but could not have foreseen just how big, it will certainly cure my problem with hitting my head on the finder Just need clear skies now.

Yes its big and heavy, looks and feels fantastic too, weather is gone to the dogs so no try yet.

I wonder do i need a counterweight.

An 8-24 zoom has appeared on Buy'n'sell for only £18. Could be a cheap way of trying a zoom for someone. It says it's the Seben version but i've used the Seben and it was identical to my own Celestron 8-24.

The added weight of the baader will help if you use a refractor, ie you can push the tube further up to achieve balance, makes for more comfortable viewing...
