I found my first galaxy

Andromeda What a sight, well actually not really as I am sure you know but still, I saw a galaxy :)

I half thought I would like to get a goto setup but I just dont think it would be as much fun as finding something yourself. For any other newbs out there get the book 'Turn left at Orion' It is just what you need to get started.

Cool isnt it when you find your first fuzzy, try and have a look at orion id did lastnight for the first time....you wont be dissapointed

Thats the problem with this as a hobby. I need to go to bed and get some sleep. 2 kids who dont like sleeping after 06:30

Blinky, my 1 yr old son has been up every morning at 5am since the clocks changed last weekend! Whats more, he WILL NOT go back down. GAH! So I sympathise

Nice one Blinky. You will be able to find lots using Turn Left at Orion. Another good galaxy challenge for you is M81 and 82.

Congrats, Blinky! I well remember the way I caught my breath when I first got M31 into the FOV.

Isn't it just great? I had a little trouble with it the other day, but when it finally slided into the FOV, unmistakable, it was just a beauty.

M42 is an even better experience, I must say.

I was observing the Andromeda Galaxy for about a month before I realised I was only seeing the core :oops:

(My first scope/eyepiece wasn't able to show the whole galaxy!)

I must say, I was a little disappointed with M31, granted, the seeing wasn't that great, it didn't blow me away visually. Saying that, the realisation of viewing our nearest galaxy, gave me quite a buzz. I shall take another look when the seeing has improved, when that will be, I have no idea..

M42 does it for me every time... 8)

Short focal-length + wide-angle eyepiece + dark-sky + M31 =
