Sales regrets?

I'm not too familiar with motorbikes but I know what you are saying. I tried to apply a bit of science to this phenomenon..

First of all, there's the 'birth' of the said telescope/guitar/bike/whatever...... manufacturing tolerances and individual care of assembly may produce a slight uniqueness in an item.

Then there's the use of the item, and it's ongoing characteristics when cared for by an individual with their own set of behaviour patterns. With a guitar this is notable in the way it's played producing varying fret wear patterns, adjustments to string tension affecting the truss tension of the neck, storage and humidity conditions and most uniquely and perhaps arguably ... I believe the specific way the wood and components react and 'settle' to the ongoing vibrations of a particular players usage over the years lend the instrument a personality, I'm speaking sort of empirically from experience here, but they definitely 'play in' in certain ways. I guess motor vehicles, and to come back on topic, even telescopes too, start to 'mould' to their individual owners usage as soon as they come out of the box in that heavenly moment of unpacking

Unpacking brand new computer gear has it's own heady 'smell', especially Apple kit - I think it's ozone or something, they should bottle it and sell it

I've already sold a couple of effects pedals I rather liked in order to fund Astro kit purchases, I have mild regrets on a couple of counts already, e.g. my rare Vox Valvetone, but sometimes you just have to move onwards and jettison a bit of weight.

Otherwise my Korg MS20 synth, sundry original 70s guitar effects, and perhaps

(for the memories too!), my late Dad's Trio R-1000 communications receiver.

But I suspect all will have given pleasure (had more use?) in their new homes...

I seriously regret selling my first telescope, a 60mm f/15 refractor, similar to Daves. I had some great nights with that 'scope.

I also wish I'd hung on to my Roland SH-101 monosynth - a true classic and still changing hands for silly money.

Heads up: I'm also about to sell a whole load of music gear to fund more astro purchases, including a Behringer MX8000 mixer, an Alesis 24 Track HDR, a Yamaha QY70 Sequencer and a rack of effect processors (reverbs, compressors, delays, patchbays etc). I brought Marks Celestron 5" nexstar and regret selling it! it was fantastic scope. If i knew now what i did then i wouldnt have parted with it.

You are correct Steve this Nexstar 5 had good optics and it was a great grab and go. Who has it now I wonder? I do miss it but it served my purpose for many years and the goto really taught me the sky.

As with any specialist interest, I hoard everything I possibly can. With my ever increasing collection of EPs and scopes, I ay need to reorganise my shed, a little.

I aim to have a set of EPs dedicated and suited to each scope, and with the 114mm Celestron destined for export to France next weekend, my dilemmas will be reduced. either that or I'll see it as space for another scope (180mm Mak??).

So, no regretful sales yet............

Sometimes I miss my good old 6" F/8 home-made scope. It was a really nice instrument, with a very well-baffled wooden octagonal tube. Made someone else happy, though!

Strangely enough I've just asked this question on cloudy nights. I've given up trying to "optimise" across scopes, and buy eyepieces with ONE scope in mind now...

Golly, I am trying to flog my trusty LX50 10 inch to purchase an Intelliscope 14ii. I'm reconsidering as I love the optics and am just changing for the heck of it.

- that smell you refer to - the nice "new consumer product" smell? It actually does come out of a bottle. It's a kind of industrial perfume that's wiped across tech products with a cloth as one of the last stages before the plastic bag is put on - in order to give the customer a nice experience when they unwrap the product.

It's a spray. Sorry to spoil the magic
