There is much evidence to suggest that Thomas Harriot did, indeed, make the first astronomical observations with a telescope, and also made the first telescopic drawing of the Moon, pre-dating Galileo by several months. However, it is possible that he was suspected of being involved in the 'gunpowder plot' and was, therefore, 'keeping his head down'. Consequently, Harriot's observations were never published, unlike Galileo's, and the rest is history...

How about the BBC's 'Space Odyssey - Voyage to the Planets', a two-part pseudo-documentary, set in the near future, which depicts a manned 'grand tour' of the solar system. I thought it was quite good...

I'm a bit of a refractor fan myself, but I don't seem to have too much of a problem with dew, (usually). Lee.

No problem, look forward to meeting you. BTW, our July meeting is a telescope / question and answer evening, where members bring along and set up some kit and try to answer any questions or give advice. Could be useful... Cheers, Lee.

Hi Rich, I'm a member of the North Devon Astronomical Society and, though we hold our meetings in Barnstaple, our membership come from all across the area, including at least one from Winkleigh. We operate two observatories, with 18" and 20" telescopes, at West Buckland and Burrington, where we hold regular observing sessions for members and the general public. As far as I know, the next nearest societies are in Tiverton and Callington. Why not pop along to one of our meetings and see what you think? The details are on the website... Lee.

Another vote for SharpCap here... Lee. -
I downloaded this ap the other day and, while I haven't played with it too much as yet, first impressions seem promising. I currently use a netbook to control my mount and don't have any plans to upgrade the software and use my iPhone as the controller. However, that may change if I find I really like the ap... Lee.

If you really want to illicit a reaction from the 'Fanboys' over on CN, just post a less than adoring comment on ANY TeleVue product... It's worse than ridiculous. Lee. -
