Chile Earthquake May Have Shortened Days on Earth - Yahoo! News

So it seems that the earthquake altered the tilt of the Earth's axis, and the length of the day.

But don't all go rushing out into your back gardens hoping to glimpse Eta Carinae or the Magellanic Clouds! :( - the effect is very slight. Interesting though: I had no idea earthquakes could do that. I wonder what really precise astrometric equipment will have to be re-calibrated? I presume ordinary amateur mounts will be unaffected...:)

May have ? Should have ? Could have ? To scientific for me but still made me laf.

I also heard that nuclear explosions, especially the french one was it a couple of years ago could have, may have and would have also altered the tilt of the Earths axis. Afriend of mine swore the position of the moon had changed. It had. She moved 40 miles north of Birmingham. :(

:)

OK

I never knew that the length of a day was that precise, we are talking about 1.26 microseconds (a microsecond is one millionth of a second)

No doubt the doomsayers will now predict a second ice age and Armageddon.

So it now looks like I have to change my early morning alarm clock to compensate

There is 1.26 milliseconds a day that i aint getting back.

Oh to think what i could have done in that time simply is not worth thinking about.

I think it's meant to be microseconds, not milliseconds. An error on the Yahoo page. A millisecond error might possibly be quite significant on really top-notch GOTO's.

I thought 1.26 milliseconds was a BIT too much. Microseconds sounds a bit more real.
