Lovely sketch Mick. I was in this area myself on saturday night.

Cassiopeia has become one of my favorite constellations(probably because it's in the darkest part of my tiny sky).The amount of stars closely packed together is awesome, and the colour difference between them all is beautiful.

Your sketch really shows what I was gazing at very well indeed..

I have tried a couple of sketches of clusters, and fields of stars ,but find the large number of objects difficult to cope with.i.e getting all the stars in the right place, in the dark ,having lifted my pencil off the paper....think I need more practice nudging the scope and sketching at the same time.

Do you use a red light light whilst sketching?

do you do a rough version first?

Yes Craig I have red clip on light that attaches to my clip board. The sketch is as accurate as I can make it. Then it is transfered over to photoshop.

Doc you are a man of many talents - it even look like an owl. very nice.

Very nice Doc you have a talent for the sketching thing. I just end up with a few pencil dots of varying darkness and a circle for the galaxy each time!

Me too Mark ! and as soon as pencil leaves paper the next few dots are in the wrong place ! doh...

NGC457 is one of my favourite clusters
