AstroLandscapes #28 - Dreamy Auriga

Recommended Posts

I was out last night having a second attempt at my first "deepscape" shot (more on which later hopefully).  The cold front that had pushed through during the day led to stunningly transparent skies to my north east and naked eye star colours seemed really strong.  To capture the essence of that, I brought out the Starglow filter for one of my favourite parts of sky - the Auriga / Taurus region.

Canon 1000D with Samyang 24mm f/1.4 lens at f/1.4

Sky: 10x 15s exposure at ISO800 with ALyn Wallace Starglow filter from Kase filters

Foreground: 12x 15s exposure at ISO800 (without filter)

Stacked in Sequator and edited in LR and PS.

Those colours leap off the screen don't they ? The filter has made a good job of the Hyades.

Dave.

I do think the Hyades generally needs a bit more love! Not as pretty as its neater neighbour, but still a majestic sight in my view.

Great photo, and the colours are amazing.

I spent a couple of hours last night from 10.pm looking at this area and the area from Cassiopeia toPerseus with my 15x70 binoculars fixed to a Manfrotto tripod .

this was a nice change from using my telescopes gorgeous wide fields of view.

Absolutely. I remember rating the Hyades and Pleiades as being about the same for naked eye viewing pleasure. Aldebaran always drew me to the Hyades with its distinct orange colour. I don't really see its colour now :( Indeed, if I was giving someone a guided tour of the winter sky I'd take them round Taurus and ask them to describe the colour of Aldebaran. Even first-time, casual observers would be able discern the colour, something that would surprise them :)

I think nowadays they, the Hyades, get lost in our light polluted skies and also they aren't well suited to telescopic observation so perhaps a lot of modern observers and imagers  don't even know they exist?

It's only since joining SGL that I discovered that Capella's triangle of friend is called "The Kids". A lovely name! The Kids are, along with Orion's belt, one of a handful asterisms I'd discovered for myself as a child, before learning to read well enough to pick up an astronomy book to start learning stuff.

The more I look at that image the more fond memories flood back!
