It is rare to see the gas and Ion tails almost diametrically opposed like that. If they guided on the comet, should there not be some star trailing? Perhaps It's movement is head on to the cameras direction.

There's two ways process this, aligning stars or aligning comet, it's a simple (slight understatement) of combining the two.

In the article, it states how they've done this - basically, one set of images is tracked on the comet, then another on the stars.

Then, subtract the elongated stars on the comet tracked images and substitute the steady stars from the star tracked images and voila!

If only it were that simple!
