Celestron image5 and sharpcap

Recommended Posts

The spec for the Neximage 5 is not very good for a dedicated Planetary Camera:

"FPS - 6.23 to 52.37 at the lowest resolution, 0.71 to 5.99 at the highest resolution"

But looks like you should be able to get at least 6fps with the right settings, which is fast enough to focus.

What software are you using to drive the camera ?

With the neximage 5 I have here I use the imaging source driver for this camera sensor and can use sharpcap. I was looking for the capture I took of the Moon but haven't located it yet so I could share whether I used avi or ser though I did process the video in Registax.

I'm using sharpcap. (Or at least trying).

I feel I've been sold a pup with the camera.

Five or six frames per second is the best this camera can do at full frame size because of the limitations of the USB2 interface.  It should achieve that though, and I'd have thought it would be sufficient for focusing.  What exposure time are you setting in Sharpcap?  Obviously anything more than 0.2s will mean you get even lower frame rates because the exposure time then becomes the limiting factor.

Another thing to consider is what else you might have connected to the same USB bus as the camera.  Bandwidth is shared on each USB bus, so anything else that is taking bandwidth can reduce that available to the camera.
