First Narrowband Image M27 HOO

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I've processed my first proper narrowband image, M27 Dumbbell Nebula in HOO. Taken over 2 nights last week. Captured using the SW ED80 DS-Pro with 0.85x FF/FR, EQ6-R, ZWO ASI1600mm Pro.

Ha = 20 x 300s

Oiii = 31 x 300s

Total exposure 4.25 hours.

Calibrated with darks, flats and dark flats. Captured with APT, stacked in DSS and processed in Photoshop.

Will be great to get your opinions. I might try and get some more total exposure time to try and bring out the fainter outer shell and might get some RGB as well once the moon has gone.

Thanks for looking.

Excellent image Adam, well done. Zoomed right in on the cropped image and it looks really nice.

Thank you Mark.

I think this is actually my first proper image with the asi1600 so I'm really pleased with it. What a difference compared to my DSLR version

I had another go at processing my M27 image this evening and did a slightly different take on it. It's still more or less a HOO image, but I did some experimenting and put a mix of Ha+Oiii into the green channel and also used a mix of Ha+Oiii as a luminance layer. Interesting how it has turned out. I think I prefer the star colour and detail in the nebula on this version. Be interesting to know everyone else's thoughts.

Still loads to learn on processing of narrowband, seems like there are endless possibilities!

That's a great result.  You have an outer halo beginning to show...on the nebula that is...😇

I find that because M-27 is so big and bright... and such a no-nonsense target for higher Northern latitudes,  there is an artisitic / naturalistic balance to be had between revealing the faint stuff and at the same time also preserving the iconic shape and profile of the Dumbell.   (Same thing happens for M-42 as well) .

Having good data like yours, certainly opens up the options as to what you can do with the image.

Thanks for the feedback, glad you like it.

I'm sure I'll have another go at processing it on another cloudy day and come up with a completely different result. I'll probably get some more data on it at some point to try and bring out the halo more
