An interesting talk. Jeremy, I'm aware of variables, especially cepheids and their role in astronomical distance measurement, but was totally unaware of the cataclysmic class! The talk prompted some futher reading, so you taught at least one person something new tonight.

Also, Gary Poyner's explanation of magnitude visual measurement hit the spot.
