Apparently Canon announced a new full frame monochrome sensor, with 2.7 megapixels and with a pixel size of... 19µm! 

I wonder what a sensor like that would produce on a telescope... The product video looks very promising, I think it's the first time I see a video of the Milky Way! :o 

Maybe in a few years, we'll have such technology available for a fair price?

I think there already is a astronomy camera with a similar sensor... based on sCMOS, the "s" stands for Scientific.

the FLI Kepler KL400 Cooled sCMOS Camera (no shutter)... sells for abour $32,500 today.

Specs:

Peak QE: 95%
Read Noise: 1.3e- RMS
Well Depth: 89,000 electrons
Pixel Size: 11 μm
Sensor Size: 31.9mm (diagonal)
