Bad Moon Rising - ok so it's another Super Moon shot

Recommended Posts

I managed to get up on Dartmoor in time to get a nice alignment of the newly risen Super Blue Blood Moon behind Haytor Rocks.

This  is a panorama of 2 X shots taken on my fixed 400mm  f4 DO - I would have like a bit more light on the foreground, but considering the weather on arrival was not great, I was more than happy with the final result...

Many thanks you for all the kind comments, I was expecting this to be swamped with moon shots. A couple more from the same location...

I thought it would be handy to drop in a snap of the planning, while there are several apps that will do alignments, possibly the simplest and one of the best is The Photographers Ephemeris - link http://photoephemeris.com/tpe-for-desktop

I was then able to find a location about a mile from my skyline object, the thick grey line shows the direction of moonrise, I did have to move a bit due to the height of Dartmoor and the additional time the moon took to arrive on the scene.

This was the "Peek a Boo" shot, this shows a nice balance between the foreground & moon...

A quick twist for a vertical shot, I really should have used my 100-400 as there is a wonderful red  tin roof just below this...

Light was dropping fast and it was getting to be a struggle to keep detail in the foreground - this is a stitched panorama, this time 3 x vertical shots

A final shot as the moon cleared and it started snowing - job done...

I love TPE, very useful. The only problem with Dartmoor is that when you get there the sun or moon isn't actually where the tool very accurately suggests it should be due to cloud, other than that though!

Cracking shots, the first one of the Moon peaking is magical.

i must admit I have mostly changed to using PhotoPills for most of my planning as it gives a lot more information & detail. I think this was done in TPE as it works well on a PC, PP is an App so is great on the iPad & phone.

Here is a screen shot for Bigbury in a couple of months - the dotted line is a key difference as that shows the arc of th Milky Way, the larger dots show the Core & the distance away from the marker shows the height in the sky.

Lovely shots John and the planning info is very interesting, thanks for that as well.

I get that photography & astro is very "broad church", so it can mean totally different things to each person.  There are always a lot of end result images, but few that give hints on how its all planned. Plus the bit that says it does not always go quite as planned and for us in the UK, there is always a healthy dollop of luck involved in every session :)
