PHD2 calibration

Recommended Posts

Hi, when I'm doing my calibration for PHD2, the RA steps are really good but when it starts to do DEC, the star never comes back South again and finishes off with a few "nudges". I'm thinking backlash but would like some advice please as I cant find anything on the web.

EDIT: I've just had a look at the gears and the amount of backlash is fairly negligable so I don't think it's that.

Thanks,

Steve

I have an EQ5 and have almost exactly the same experience you describe, in fact sometimes the DEC distance actually increases when it's trying to nudge south back to 0.  In my case it is backlash - doesn't take much!

Try running the guiding assistant and have it measure the backlash - the value may come as a surprise?

This is more of a question than an answer .... but ... It takes a few minutes to run the PHD2 calibration routine.  If one's polar alignment was out by some way, would that also require nudges?

Seems to be the norm with PHD2, earlier versions used to return to the star before starting guiding, new versions just do a couple of nudges south, to clear backlash before starting guiding possibly  ?
