Help with welding aluminum tube sections

Hi,

A long short; but worth a try......

I've live in the Chichester, West Sussex area and I'm looking to get some aluminium tube sections welded together. Would anyone know of someone local to me who could did this?

The tube is 10 mm thick, so pretty chunky stuff, we tried to do the job at my workplace, but our welding gear wasn't up to it.

 

Any information you can offer will be much appreciated.

There a few video tutorials  on Y'Tube if you've got some equipment, best done with a MIG welder and spool gun.
Used to do a bit in my youth using oxy acetylene but takes a bit of practice.
May be some local model engineering clubs local to you who may be able to help.

Make sure they AC TIG weld it... IMHO

Herman, if you can find a local Blacksmith they will point you in the right direction if they are unable to do it themselves.  I got my local smithy to make my observatory pier, they did an excellent job at a very reasonable price.  Failing that there will be plenty of specialist welders in and around the London area.

I'm not sure if my welding skills are up to the job! But I will look at the Youtube tutorials, perhaps they'll inspire me to give it a go!

Yes a local blacksmith is a good idea; I know it's a diminishing trade, but I'd have thought there'd be at least one in this relatively rural spot. I'll investigate.

If you do attempt it yourself make sure you cool the job very slowly. If cooled too fast aluminium welds can crack. They need long slow and controlled cooling. I had a an aluminium petrol (bike)  tank many years ago and it was welded several times and cracked every time. But that was a long time before mig welding took off.  May all be different now.

An update to all:

I was able to find an engineering company a couple of miles from me who were able to do the job.

Very please with the results, so I'd be happy to recommend to anyone looking to have similar work done.

You should always be able to weld, and even if you do it, you really need to protect yourself from various injuries and dangers that await you while working with metal. One of the most useful parts of welding protective clothing is the welding sleeves and many people spend a lot of time and money finding and buying good welding sleeves. And the site https://afterpaints.com/best-welding-sleeves/ will help you with this. This site fully explains which sleeves are better and which are worse, as well as where you can buy them cheaper. The site is great and I think you will like it as much as I do.
