Backyard Milky Way

Recommended Posts

First go at this. Backyard single shot the other night with Nikon D3100, South'ish part of the Milky Way.

ISO 3200, 20 sec, 18-55mm standard Nikon lens, shot at 18mm, processed quite a bit to bring out some more detail.

I took 20 shots at 3200, 1600 and 800 with various shutter speed but could'nt get a good stack so could only process a single image. I also noticed some CA and distortion (not drift) of stars around the outer edge of images with the standard camera lens.

Nice image.

Did you focus on a star at the thirds intersection or in the middle of the frame.

You want to use the thirds intersection.

You can stack mixed sub length images in DSS but you have to load them on the tabs at the bottom I have found each set in a single stack on each tab has to be same exposure on that tab.
