Samyang lens how wide to go

I need to get a wide lens for a project im doing and was wondering just how wide I need to push it.

I am going to take some star trails with a particular tree in the foreground and I'll be using the lens with a crop sensor.

The ones that come to mind are the 8mm fisheye and the 14mm 2.8.

I'm pretty sure that they will both suffice but which do you think is the better to purchase long term.

The 14mm F2.8 gets my vote.  Fish eyes are fun and give a massive field.  You can use software to control the distortion but I think you will get higher quality results and more versatility with the 14mm

I went for the 24mm but would also like the 14mm. So yes, 14mm would be my vote.

I was pretty sure I was going for the 14mm but the thought of getting in close to foreground objects made the 8mm seem tempting.

I have the Samyang 14mm f2.8 and can thoroughly recommend it. Quite sharp right to the edges.

Not so good for architecture though, but if that was your genre you'd probably be looking at a T/S lens.

Here's my first go with the Samyang 10mm to give you a feel of the view.

The 8mm will give a distorted view so if you want a flatter image i would stick to between 10 & 14mm.

The 8mm is a lot of fun though, when using it during the day you have to be careful or you get your feet in the image! lol

There seem to be ways of getting loads of distortion and ways of avoiding it - but such a depth of field.
