Interesting article, sounds like we've got about 5 million years to sort ourselves out - The mind boggles at just how precarious life on this planet is!

I was lucky enough to catch a lecture from Dr Jonathan Horner at my local astro club (The Astronomy Centre between Bacup and Todmorden) a couple of weeks back. He's mentioned in that article and is one of the main researchers involved. The lecture was entitled 'Jupiter: Friend or Foe?' and very interesting it was too. They hope to apply their research to extrasolar planetary systems in the future in the search for Earth-like planets.
