Barlow upgrade or ep upgrade?

Recommended Posts

Okay this past week I have upgraded a few eps. I can afford one more upgrade atm, eithe an ep or a barlow. I own a 3x barlow but been considering a 2x barlow. I'm thinking the 2x barlow may be worth the investment since I have been improving with using the barlow in general. I may not fully understand how they work, I just know they do. The ep I'm looking at is a 12.5 mm. I realize once I get my 49mm ep I'll have a gap better the 25mm and the 40mm eps. I also know a barlow can help fill those gaps with the right ep. When I used the 3x barlow with the 20mm on the moon I was blown away at the added details I could see. This was on my 70 mm scope I nicknamed shorty because it has the shortest focal length. So if my understanding is correct by using the 3x barlow with the 20mm I saw a view equivalent of using a 60mm ep, please correct me if I'm wrong on that.

You may have mistyped it - it should be equivalent to a 6.66 mm eyepiece.

If you have a good range of EP's (size-wise), you really have no need for a barlow;

e.g.: If you have a 10mm EP and a 20mm EP, you dont need a 2x barlow.

If you only have a 20mm EP...........then yes a 2x barlow would give you a 10mm EP also.

Ive owned three barlows and never found much use for them as i have a wide range of EP's.

I realize once I get my 49mm ep I'll have a gap better the 25mm and the 40mm eps

A nice way to fill the gap between 25mm and 40mm, would be to get a 32mm GSO.
