seeing image in live view

Hi all,

I was wondering when using live view and a DSLR to photograph DSOs do you actually see an image on your screen or is it only after you've taken the photograph that it appears?

On mine, if I have live view enabled and have nothing on the screen I have to press 'set' which is the middle button to the right hand side of the screen.

I find that so long as I have "Exposure simulation" tuned off, I can see a lot on the LiveView screen, at least I can see the brighter stars for alignment purposes. A short exposure at high ISO will then give you a handle on your actual image before starting a run of images at normal ISO.

Live view for me is just as it sounds and implies. You must hit the button for it to be engaged and see anything.

You probably won't see faint DSOs, but should see some stars and brighter nebulae.

Cranking up the ISO will help.

I can see lots of stars on mine with the ISO turned up and even fainter stuff when zoomed in can even see colour in the orion nebula.

Hmmmm.....I must be doing something wrong, I cant see anything, I can get the moon ok and orion was just a couple of very faint stars but anything else is not happening, I know the moon may wash the sky out but thought id have saw something?

What ISO setting are you using?

Yes... Crank the ISO up very high say 3200. Then check live view

Tried all sorts of iso settings, 3200 being one of them.

450D will only show the brighter stars in F10 scope at iso 800
