looking for a free program that can process a DSS output file

title says it all really I have an old xp service pack3 laptop and i am looking for a free program that can open a DSS file any ideas please?

GIMP or Paint.net should both work.

yep i would go with gimp on the XP-SP3, you will have alot more choice

and options running something like gimp, compared to paint and the likes.

gimp doesn't appear to support the 16 bit output file produced from dss for some reason and for some reason I can't make dss produce anything in 8 bit is it even possible?

That is true - if you want 16bit you will need a commercial product as far as I know - eg Pixinsight, Photoshop etc.  GIMP has been touting that it will handle 16 bit "shortly" for quite a considerable time!!

thank you all for your help. I think much of the problem is that I am a complete duffer regarding software. I have now found something that will open up  the file and convert it to 8 bit it's not a spectacular picture but at least I can say I did it.  The drop in quality isn't really an issue as I don't know what I am doing anyway. Thanks again

A little bit off topic but is there any processing software out there that can handle full 32bit processing i know PS can open them and do some very limited stuff.
