thank you all for your help. I think much of the problem is that I am a complete duffer regarding software. I have now found something that will open up  the file and convert it to 8 bit it's not a spectacular picture but at least I can say I did it.  The drop in quality isn't really an issue as I don't know what I am doing anyway. Thanks again

This from Pixinsight site files it can handle

8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit unsigned integer pixels

32-bit and 64-bit IEEE 754 floating point real pixels

32-bit and 64-bit IEEE 754 floating point complex pixels
