using a 200p dobsonian OTA on a HEQ5/EQ5

Recommended Posts

Hello...

I purchased a Skywatcher Skyliner 200P Dobsonian approx. 12 months ago.

Having been very happy with the scope itself, I am hoping you could help me answer some questions before I possibly purchase a new mount.

My intentions is to hopefully take the 200p OTA and mount it on a tracking/GOTO mount.

1. Do you know the weight of the 200p OTA only?

2. Would a EQ5 of HEQ5 + dovetail/bars be able to take the weight of the 200p OTA?

3. Can you describe the difference between the EQ5 and HEQ5. What does the 'H' denote ?

Have you heard or experienced anyone trying to use a motorized mount with the 200p DOB scope?

Thankyou very much.

Hello, I have a Skyliner 200P and an HEQ5 Pro.

I don't know the weight of the OTA but I have used it mounted on the HEQ5 (I think I read that the H designates that it is the heavy duty version of the EQ5, but don't quote me on it) and it is a fine combination for visual use. The black plastic dob mounts on the tube can make getting the prefect orientation of the OTA in the tube rings tricky but it's not a huge issue. Also, when viewing objects near the zenith the eyepiece can be quite high up - I am 6'1" and I need to stand on something to reach the eyepiece comfortably.

Are you intending on using it just for visual or for AP as well? The 1200mm focal length would make imaging tricky and I think even the HEQ5 would be near it's limit with the OTA and camera. Hope this helps.

You can image with the 200P and use the EQ5 as have a lot of folk on here with great results,it's not perfect but if you're on a budget then it's cetainly worth thinking about

For visual the HEQ5 would be fine, the dob OTA is about 200mm longer than the F5 version which itself acts as a sail in strongish winds doesn't hurt visual image but not so good for AP the EQ5 would be on it's limit not necessarily with the weight but the extra length
