M51

Hi all, did the usual tour of the sky last night, but the stand out item last night for me was M51. I managed decent detail two bright cores and spiral visible, first time I have managed that from the back garden, given light pollution.

Well done LeeB! I tried for this last year but couldn't make out any spiral details. Definitely found the location though. LP is a killer but sounds like you circumvented that. Clear skies!

M51 and NGC 5195 are a great pair of galaxies.

Nice one. How much spiral structure could you make out?

I could see two arms of the spiral with one forming a connection with the other core, (from near a town I was very happy), the arm that finished/petered out on the opposite side to the other core was the best defined. Hope that makes some sence.

I have spotted the spiral arms of M51, but mostly from dark locations. Well done picking them out! If the sky is very transparent, I find LP is less of a problem, as there is little moisture or dust in the air for the LP to reflect from.
