What if we lived in a field of nebulosity?

Have you ever thought how lucky we are that the Earth is not sat in the middle of a nebula. It would probably mean that we would not be here discussing all things astro.

Its called the Anthropic Principle.....the fact that Earth is a reasonably stable, hospitable place for life to evolve means that we have evolved here rather than somewhere inhospitable.

Nebula is the Latin for mist or cloud, which is the normal condition down this way!

We are lucky at the moment as the Sun is passing through a bit of the milky way that has less gas & dust then average.

It is believed to be caused by supernovas 'clearing' the area.

Last I heard the odds were something like 25,000 to 1 against a collision. It might prove pointless though placing a bet. If you won, you and the bookmaker might not be around to settle up!

There seems to be a bit of disagreement as to when APOPHIS will actually buzz us. 2029 seems to be the popular choice, but I read that due to gravitational effects there is a danger that is could actually hit us in 2036.......hmmm, seems a little vague if you ask me.

Either way I hope my time machine is complete by then!

Going off track here what I meant was if we were in a region of nebulosity it might obscure us from being able to peer into the rest of the universe.

I read somewhere that the nebulosity is more apparent from a distance, and we'd be able to see out pretty well. In any case, we were inside a nebula when the sun was created. The cloud and its cluster have since dispersed.
