Er....is this rust?

Hello all

Just noticed these marks this evening. For some reason I thought I wouldn't get rust inside a scope. I'm assuming its rust, it looks like rust, it's probably rust. Is this a quality control thing?

I'm guessing I should get it attended to, some rust treatment and paint/flocking.

My beloved 10"....

Looks like mildew to me from the apparent colour, have you tried wiping any of it off?

On my screen it looks like rust, but either way, it's not ideal.

Mildew, never thought of that. It does feel slightly hard. I'll investigate further soon, bit shocked really.

Looks a bit like rust or some form of corrosion to me, coming through under the matte black paint. I'm assuming this is the GSO 10" dob ?

I guess you could sand it down, treat it then flock the tube.

The tubes are usually ally so I wouldnt think its rust. It can oxidise though and go flaky. Has it been near salt water ?

That'll be close enough. When I was motorcycling an open-deck ferry journey such as to the Isle of Man or across the Elbe estuary had immediately perceptible effects on alloy parts.

Thanks all, bit alarming really. Looks like I have another weekend job....might as well clean the mirror while I have It out.

This could be one of those circumstances when a mirror might benefit from a more frequent wash than is normally recommended, salty deposits can accellerate the wear and tear on mirror coatings.

you could flock the tube while the mirror is out that should help
