Gina's Observatory Build - Abbreviated - Overview

Recommended Posts

This abbreviated write up has been overdue for ages but at last I'm making a start :D I am splitting the construction into a number of threads to improve reader accessibility as I have have had considerable interest in my build.

Note :- I have had a couple of goes at this but I keep getting crashes - I thought Win 7 might be better - oh no it isn't! :( So I'll post this in bits...

The sections I'm planning are :-

  1. Overview - this thread
  2. Site Preparation :- http://stargazerslou...te-preparation/
  3. Building The Pier :- http://stargazerslou...n/#entry1769101
  4. Main Construction :- http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/172985-ginas-observatory-build-abbreviated-main-construction/
  5. Finishing Touches & Improvements :- http://stargazerslou...d-improvements/

The Site

The location of my observatory is in the southeast corner of our plot which is on a gentle slope on the side of a hill. There are good views to the east and south with more obstructed views to the north and west due to rising ground, buildings and trees.

The site before any work was started, looking roughly south (The blue and white object on the left in the photo is the rain gauge for my weather station, raised off the ground on a framework) :-

Thanks Gina for the summary! As mentioned a few days ago, I might use the same asymmetric roof design as you. How do you find the rigidity is such a roof structure (when it's not half way across the field)?

Thanks :) I think I'll add a thread going over the various design aspects - separate from the actual build. There are a number of special points to this build and several places where I have changed the design during the build. Experienced building designers may be able to design something and stick to it but that isn't me :D

I have started another thread for "Final Design Aspects". This will take all the aspects of the final design from the finished build and avoid all the wrong turns in design as the build progressed.

Great to see a 'Readers Digest condensed version' of your terrific build

Have you considered setting up a web site to document your achievements or do you prefer the social interaction in SGL?

Thank you very much :)

I might set up a web site for it - I have thought of it. I already have a web site for my weather station (though the station is out of action ATM). Yes, I do love the interaction in SGL - I think it's wonderful - great bunch of people and none of the back-biting so often seen on other sites :)
