Novel binos support

I play drums and one of the items in a drumkit is a cymbal stand with a boom arm......

If binos were mounted at the end of the arm you would have a very rigiid and manouverable support with easy access to the binos, (without the intrusion of tripod legs for example).

The only issue is that the thread of the cymbal holder is 8mm while the thread of a bino adapter hole is 1/4 inch.

If an adapter for this could be made, or perhaps an opticron t-mount adapter altered, then it could work. What do you think?

I shouldn't think the binos weigh more - this sort of stand easily takes a lump of brass 24" in diameter, heavy! - and it takes the weight while you pound on the cymbal and whack it v.hard for a crash or swell etc. The stands have to be really sturdy and the one in the picture even has a counter-weight on the other end of the arm.

The thread on that is 8mm and would need adapting to take an L-mount or a modified B&S head...............perhaps..

Simple addition of a 8.5mm drill hole in the "L" and then a pair of nylon lock bolts & washers. Still have the original thread hole for a tripod then :)

If you rotate the support arm in the vertical plane such that the counterweight is uppermost, the binocular can then be fitted to the clamp and you can sit with the tripod behind you. This gives access to the zenith with little neck strain. :)

I haven't quite worked out how to attach the binos- any ideas?

Any engineering shop will help you with that. Lump of angle steel, drilled and threaded for 8mm for mount end, same for 20X1/4 for bins end. Probably do it for a tenner in the tea fund.

Thought about something similar for a mike stand (sax) but they're not as rigid as drummers kit. This is for two reasons. Mike stands don't need to stand being bashed hard. The other is, musicians can manage to look after more delicate kit in a way drummers can't.;)
