The white area is flaring in the active region. It's very difficult to capture this and the rest of the chromosphere at correct exposure because the flaring is so much brighter. Nice couple of pics.

A beautiful couple of images of a flaring active region, a lucky catch!

As Mark says, you will always get white saturated pixels during a flare event, that's what makes the picture spectacular. The same happens to the SDO camera during a flare.
