Flowing water discovered on Mars!

Wow. That must be some pretty salty water to remain liquid at those temperatures. Still, it improves the chance of a manned mission considerably. ;)

They said it would probably be easier to use the ice on Mars for practical manned uses, but this liquid water could potentially help to support certain organisms.

I don't think the first manned missions will rely on finding water on the surface to sustain the astronauts. But certainly down the line, the discovery of liquid water offers vast potential for a sustained presence.

Don't get your hopes up - there's no mention of finding liquid water on Mars:

"A sequence of images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter show many long, dark "tendrils" a few metres wide."

Could be caused by anything ;)

As they said in the news announcement on NASA TV, they think flowing water is the most likely explanation. They're seasonal, occur only in warmer places on the planet and don't have the signs associated with landslides or dust storms.
