  1. I can see Ganymede with my new binoculars. 😁😁😁
  2. I made me let out a howl of misery. I got news bins on 3rd October and haven't even used them yet. ☚ī¸
  3. In episode 3 he gets a camera out and does some AP. 😁
  4. Yeah, that's why it's so good, because it is expressing scientific ideas backed up by music, art, literature etc so we can all be inspired in ways which may be more familiar. One of my favourite quote of his is 'Oldham looks like New Order sound.'
  5. I don't know what you are all complaining about. this is popular science, it's supposed to be full of atmospheric music and CGI. It's never going to be breaking new scientific ground. Maybe the BBC shouldn't spend any more money on Brian Cox. Maybe on things that more people will be interested in - the Great British Lawn mow-off for example. I'm not a scientist and I love the sorts of things that Brian Cox does. His philosophical approach and vivid prose fires up my imagination, just like Carl Sagan before.
  6. I like that pronunciation. Sviebonie I think it could be more Russian/Slavic sounding like Svbonya
  7. Did they give Chris the opportunity to voice his concerns before turning on the floodlights ? I mean, you could say treat people as you would like to be treated yourself. But, some people are just unreasonable. I suppose the worst that could happen is being told to [expletive deleted] off. Approaching the neighbour first, and then bringing in the council, then the neighbour would know who it was who grassed them up. I hope that Chris will make his own mind up about how to deal with this situation.
  8. That's how I would see it. People who do things without considering how their actions will affect others may not be prepared to be reasonable when challenged. I would go straight to the council myself if I couldn't live with it, without confronting the neighbours directly. I wouldn't feel bad about not approaching the first as they are the ones bein inconsiderate.
  9. I think you will be surprised how little difference it makes apart from obviously ruining your dark adaption. One of my neighbours has a really bright floodlight like those. I have found that when I'm observing, using a hood to cut out the other light from various windows etc, I can't tell whether the light is on or off. I also find that it makes no discernable difference for AP in my bortle 5/6 skies. I can't tell the difference anyway from one frame to another.
  10. It's mindless. Why are they lighting up the sky? We are all supposed to be thinking about reducing our energy consumption, not wasting it with pointless floodlights which annoy everyone and don't deter burglars anyway.
  11. That's really outrageous. You could complain to your local authority, there are laws about lighting causing a nuisance. Artificial light nuisances: how councils deal with complaints - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
  12. That's bad. But at least you can't get disappointed when what looks like a clear night turns red as it gets closer.
  13. I think that sending James Kirk into space is guaranteed to bring on a full scale alien invasion. đŸ¤Ŗ
  14. No, but there was a little packet which said 'Do not eat'. I don't know whether it was referring to the packet or the binoculars, but I wasn't very peckish anyway. 😄
  15. It was my birthday recently and I was very pleased to have received these'
  16. If you have more money than sense, and you're one of those people that craves instant gratification, then I'm sure it is the ideal product. Much like their other offerings. I enjoy the process of learning and the results are only satisfying if I have put in the effort to achieve them. I suspect that I'm far from alone. It's an expensive toy, and it will be no better than a ÂŖ200 Skywatcher Newtonian for learning astronomy with. No effort = no reward.
  17. I think there is car parking at Cheshunt Park. Mind you, it is over 30 years since I lived there so things might have changed. It's quite a large park, mostly open grass so you should be able to get good views without any direct LP. Maybe park in the Golf Club carpark or St Paul's School, or could park on the street near the school,
  18. I'm pretty sure, without even watching it, Ed will have gone for an 8" Dob. 😄
  19. I think a DSLR with a crop sensor would be better for framing the moon through your telescope
  20. If you are successful in acquiring the 8" Dob, I would recommend the book 'Turn Left at Orion'. It is excellent at suggesting targets and really helps in locating them. https://www.firstlightoptics.com/books/turn-left-at-orion-book.html
  21. I would imagine that he is in the 10 years plus bracket. It is difficult to determine how long it would take a newbie to get similar results because it depends on so many factors. Weather Location Budget Equipment Commitment Affinity for software Changing technology And so on. For most newbies, the best thing is to measure progress against your previous efforts and not to worry too much about what others are doing. What telescope are you hoping to get? I assume that you focus is going to be on astrophotography.
  22. Maybe. 😄 In my opinion, Astrobiscuit is very talented. He achieves remarkable results with very unpromising equipment. Please be aware that it is not as easy as he makes it look. Astrobiscuit has a considerable ability with processing software which you don't get to see. Also, I wouldn't chop up telescopes and cameras like he does unless you are very confident you know what you are doing.
  23. I agree that these require a white t-shirt as the colour is slightly blue.
