The sky looked nice, dark and clear this evening, so decided to put my recently modded Europa to the test (new OO mirror cell and fully flocked).

The seeing was fast and conditions quite windy, but I set up away from the house on the site of my new obs.   Not good enough for the 5x powermate, so I dropped back to the TV x3 barlow and imaged around 3500mm.

Quick RGB from the last session of the night:

Not too shabby for a rudimentary collimation ;)  I'll reprocess this with Io and Ganymede tomorrow night.

Very nice capture Jake. Well done, the conditions were not great.

I too was out as well last night and the gentle breeze was problematic.  Just about to process my data.

Thanks Lee, it was more of a test run at this end for the modded Europa and the site for the new obs.   Like the position, but wind will always be an issue with a 10" newt behemoth on the HEQ5 - I think a dome potentially offers the best protection against both wind and dew, but the idea of building one is quite daunting!

I don't envy you building a dome obsy.

I myself do like the open top of the roll off roof, just something about looking up while the scope and cameras are doing their thing.

last night I did have an idea about somehow erecting wind breaks to the prevailing wind side of my obsy, need to do a little research

I have so many thing on my "to do" list, will I every be happy.

I too flocked my Europa, not sure if made too much difference but the dew seems to say away longer.

Is the bottom of your scope now open with the new mirror cell ?

I do like the idea of open top and the roll off is much easier to build, but I think for imaging the dome will offer best protection and I can enjoy the open sky outside with my 10" F6 dob (once it's completed/reassembled - yet another project :) )

The new mirror cell is the OO 9 point, which leaves the end of the tube very much open - it's also moved the focal point about 1/2" forward, which is an advantage as I was working very close to the in focus limit with my planetary imaging train (FW, Barlow and camera) and couldn't use some of my barlows.   I was concerned about stray light, though investigation with a small LED torch while I was setup last night showed no noticeable change or loss of contrast with the short exposures.     Though I do have a black dust proof shower cap that I use to cover the end while not in use and could use if I was getting light leakage during longer exposures.

Your OO sounds good. When you get your new scope I'm more than happy to take your old one off your hands so you'll have more space..... I'm kind like that, lol

Lee

You may have a long wait - the build costs are looking set to rise and there's no sign of my PPI payout just yet!
