Sky-Watcher or Revelation

Recommended Posts

I have been looking at the Sky-Watcher 8" (£287.95 inc postage) and Revelation 8" (£280.95 inc postage) Dobsonians. They both seem to have good reviews but which one? It seems that the Revelation has a ball bearing turntable and the Sky-Watcher a teflon one. Which is better. One advantage with the Revelation seems to be the Crayford style focuser (what is it?) and a 12V fan built in. Does anyone have any opinions on these? Another alternative is the Orion Skyquest XT* Classic (£309.35 inc postage). I think that I read somewhere that someone with a Revelation changed the turntable bearings for teflon one. I wonder if this was with a kit or what?

Any help would be appreciated. (I am leaning towards the Revelation though)

Thanks

Brian    (not really)

There are several threads discussing this subject . If you do a quick search .

But all in all there's little difference it seems .

There was some comments regarding revelation mirror coatings being a little shoddy , however others say it's a past problem that's been addressed .

I think the revelation dobsonian base is a better one than skywatchers version .

I'd go for the Skywatcher or the Orion (which is made by the same people who make Skywatcher).

I've owned both Skywatcher and Revelation / GSO dobs and I feel that Skywatcher have slightly better optics on the whole.

All dob's can be improved "out of the box" by a few simple tweaks here and there. I found the Skywatcher bearings fine in both the 8" and 10" sizes though.

That said, there is not a lot between them and I'm sure you will enjoy whichever you do choose to buy

After using both types of bearing I personally prefer teflon. I find the roller bearings actually allow to easy a movement. if the movement is too easy I find a scope moves when changing eyepieces etc.

This is of coarse a personal choice, others may differ.

This is an answer from Telescope House with reference to the mirror: 'The Mirror is Quartz overcoated for durability, which afford the mirrors a bit more protection from degradation.  Like any reflecting telescope, you will eventually need to realuminise the mirrors, though overcoating will stave this off for years.  Modern overcoating like the quartz on the Revelation scopes does a wonderful job.'

Hi. I have got a 12" Revelation Dob and have had it now for just over 12 months, I have found it be very good and have compared it with some Skywatcher Dobs. There is very little between the optics. Where the Revelation wins in my book is the focuser and fan, Both are only small things and Im sure with what ever dob you go for you will be very happy.

Does your's have the ball bearing mount? If so, is it OK?

Good news that they are overcoated this time around (all decent mirrors are overcoated). In the past the Revelations have had poor or non existent overcoatings which has lead to the need to aluminise them earlier than should normally be the case.

By the way, the 1/12th wave figure referred to in the advertising is an RMS figure which equates to around 1/4 wave PV (just about).
