I am putting together a 12" f5 dobsonian (hopefully in time for SGL2015). May I ask where you got the formica?

I am having little obvious success finding some around Newcastle-u-lyme/Stoke-on-Trent.

A pointer or two would be much appreciated!

I bought mine in a large sheet from ebay for about £40. If you pm Alan (aka Rustysplit on sgl) he has some original ebony star laminate that he may sell you.
