Tbird; Spalding does indeed have big skies (though just big clouds tonight) and I'm fortunate not be too blighted by light pollution.

Adz; thanks for the tip re Turn Left at Orion and Stellarium. The latter is downloaded it looks excellent. And will be invaluable in getting to know the night sky again.
