Good books for a complete novice

Looking to get a good book or two to get me going to buy or from the library.

Any advise would be great.

Turn Left at Orion, the library might not have it but it's well worth buying.

"The backyard astronomer's guide" by T. Dickinson and A. Dyer ; "Through the telescope" by M. Porcellino ; "Nightwatch" by T. Dickinson ; Collins "Skywatching" by D. Levy ; "Star-hopping for backyard astronomers" by A. MacRoberts.

Any or all of these books are essential reading for beginners and not-so beginners. There's a wealth of information in any one of them.

I haven't seen this one but it gets glowing reviews, will pop it on my wish list.

it's superb. it either helps with planning or means that you can literally take it out and not plan - finding targets as you go.

I got "The Illustrated Guide to...." on Shanes advice and it really is good - especially for use in the field. Only about £16 from Amazon so well worth a punt
