New Signs of Water on Mars

Watching the 10 o'clock news at the moment about water on mars. How can they say that there is water on the surface of mars when it's well known that the surface temperature is well below 0 degrees C and the air pressure is massively lower than that needed for liquid water to remain liquid.

They are talking about seeing "5 swimming pool's worth" of water. I'm sure that I could survive on that....... for about a week! Is this just a aquifer that has splurged onto the surface? Or are they on about actual liquid water running on the surface? No time for discussion, move to the sport quickly...

NASA Images Suggest Water Still Flows in Brief Spurts on Mars

12.06.06 -- NASA photographs have revealed bright new deposits seen in two gullies on Mars that suggest water carried sediment through them sometime during the past seven years.

"These observations give the strongest evidence to date that water still flows occasionally on the surface of Mars," said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA's Mars Exploration Program, Washington.

I don't think so. Remember you are dealing with bureaucracies here, who have to sell their ideas to politicians in order to get the budget to do anything. The Moon will be an easier sell than Mars in the minds of most politicians, although the presence of water on Mars may get more Mars explorations going, and perhaps a crewed Mars mission in addition to Mars exploration. This may not be logical, but it is how bureaucracies function.
