Used dob

Recommended Posts

Hi Dafman. Bit difficult to answer specifically. It really all depends on the spec of the dob, the equipment supplied with it, it's age and condition, and any modifications done to it.

E.g. you may get one with motors supplied for tracking, some may have had focusser upgrades or balance modifications, upgraded or recently serviced optics may have a bearing, it might have been flocked, or it may have ancilliary equipment like cooling fans, dew shields, shrouds, or goto electronics added.

The way I do it is to look at the "brand new" price of the basic scope (FLO is a good guide to that). Get the new prices of of any special add-ons (e.g. moonlight dual speed focusser), and evaluate the cost of mods and other kit. Then bank on anywhere between 50%-70% of the total. Not precise but a good starting point for negotiations.

Hope that helps :)
