DSLR 18-55 FOV?

How do i work out the FOV for my default lens on my Camera, It is a 18-55 generic Canon lens, Ill be using a 2" LPF so I wont be able to go do to 18, ill need to play a little.

If you don't need it to be too accurate and still remember SOH CAH TOA from school you should be able to do it taking a sample pic and doing some measuring

Aim the camera squarely at a wall and take a pic. Look at the image and place marks on the wall at the edge FOV, level with the height of the camera.

Where A is distance from wall and F is the distance between the marks..

(F/2)/A tan = FOV/2 (half the FOV)

(FOV/2)*2 = FOV

The answer is (for a Canon 450D, based on your signature camera):

@ 18mm 63degrees horizontal x 44 vertical

@ 55mm 22degrees horizontal x 15 vertical

I found the answer. The lens has a FOV of between 74-27 degrees. I think its on the diagonal.

You need the focal length and the sensor size to compute this. The APS-C sensor of the 450D is 22.2 x 14.8mm. The formula is

fov(degrees) = 360 * atan(sensor_size/(2* focal_length)) / pi

For 18mm this gives a fov 63.3 x 44.7 degrees

For 55mm it gives a fov 22.8 x 15.3 degrees
