JWST vs Hubble

I just came across this randomly, it shows the size of the new James Webb Space Telescope vs the size of Hubble

Just think of what hubble could see with an ultra deep field, the JWST will go further into the infra-red, seeing further back with a huge aperture

The JWST mirror actually reminds me of something....

That might be where they got the idea for how the mirror should look

and its going to be much much further away from the "noise" of earth. Lets just hope everything goes ok as its to far away to send an engineer to fix it

I can't wait for these pictures to start coming in. Will be interesting to see how much better than the Hubble images they will be?

What intrigued me (after the initial Hubble problems) was the fact that (naturally enough) they make prototype and SPARE mirrors. OK, so this one might impart a slight yellowish tinge, but...

The mirror segments are made from highly polished beryllium - that's my understanding. Imaging will also be shifted largely to infra-red, so I would imagine raw images will not be comparable to what we are used to seeing with the HST.

Whatever it comes up with though will be mind-blowing though. New discoveries aplenty are pretty much guaranteed I would have thought.

Launches sometime in 2013 or 2014 I think
