Combed histogram problem from DSS

I'm stacking my fits files in DSS and saving as either TIFS or FITS, but when I open in CS2 the histogram is showing up as combed rather than continuous This means I can only do slight levels and curves adjustments before the image becomes blotchy. Any ideas on what's going wrong

How are you saving the images from DSS Helen ? That normally means insufficient bit depth in the image file I think.

I've tried most of the options John, 16 bit, 32 bit, integer and rational...

Odd. 16 bit should be sufficient. I did get a little combing showing on my M3 image from last week, but only after the third or fourth stretch.

Isn't there a feature where PS does a rough initial estimation of the histogram that causes it to show up like a comb?  Then there's an icon you can click on to get the full thing?

Yes there is. Left below the histograms - a little exclamation mark in a box.
