do all eye pieces fit all telescopes

Recommended Posts

The vast majority of telscopes will accept 1.25" eyepieces. A very, very few are .965" only. Many will accept both 1.25" and 2" eyepieces, using an adaptor (usually supplied) for the smaller size.

Hi John

It's certainly not a silly question. It's one of those things which we all take for granted and for somebody joining the hobby, there's no reason why he or she should know that intuitively.

I won't add to anything the others have said but there might be a supplementary question which is are all eyepieces suitable for all telescopes? Definitely not! Longer focal length scopes are usually better suited to longer focal length EP's than smaller focal length scopes because of their different magnification capabilities. Faster scopes, say faster than F/6 need better quality EPs than slower scopes because of the way the light is refracted. So from a fairly straightforward question, you can quickly getting into more complex issues.

Have a look around here and ask some more questions and you'll quickly start to increase your own understanding

Steve

Fun though it's been, I guess this thread has gone far enough off topic now. For the benefit of the original poster (23johnw) the first 3 posts in reponse to your original (and sensible) question tell you what you need to know - feel free to ask more questions :)
