If you look at the bottom right corner of the image......there are also horizontal lines crossing what appears to be a solid rock, right below what seems to be a footprint in the dirt.

Topography is a factor. The "prints" could be the tracks of a Rover crossing the surface that is not flat or even......thus making the track width "slimmer" in places rather then an even width.

Life on Mars???

Most likely but they dont want to step forward and associate themselves with us.
