Dew Shield or dew heater?

Recommended Posts

Hello all :)

Its just been brought to my attention how much a pain dew is on the secondary. What is the preferred way of preventing this? Dew Shield or dew heater? Iv seen the camping matt approach and also a website where someone has fixed a high wattage resistor to the back of the mirror to give a small amount of heat off to keep it at bay. Need some expert opinions so where better than SGL

Thanks

I've found where I observe that stray light getting into the top of the tube can reduce the contrast with newtonian scopes so I would go for a dew shield because it would have an impact on both dewing and stray light - 2 benefits for the price of one !.

Can also depend on space....my dew shield quite commonly touches the run off roof of my observatory

If you aint got no space limitations then dew shiled....if space is an issue then perhaps one of heating bands you get from astro suppliers if the other option

I have a dew/light scatter shield but very rarely need anything more than that. For those rare occasions when i do get dew on the secondary i have the 12v hairdryer at hand.

The SCT is a completely different kettle of fish....active heat bands at all times. :)
